Navy base salutes summer with concert, fireworks

Naval Station Newport will conclude its Summer Concert Series on Friday, Sept. 2, at 5 p.m. on Dewey Field when the Navy Band Northeast presents its “Salute to Summer” concert, followed by a spectacular fireworks display over Narragansett Bay.

The concert will feature three bands from Navy Band Northeast. Navy Band Northeast’s Forecast combo will open the show with a concert of contemporary vocal and instrumental jazz, followed by Rhode Island Sound performing contemporary and classic rock. At approximately 7 p.m. the concert band will take the stage to perform patriotic marches and light concert pieces. The program will include a salute to veterans of all services.

The evening will culminate with a 25-minute fireworks display beginning at approximately 8:45 p.m.

The concert is free and the public is invited as guests of the commanding officer. Concert audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Due to increased security measures, no coolers, backpacks, glass bottles, or pets will be allowed on to the naval complex.

The general public should enter Naval Station Newport through Gate One, the main entrance near the officers club. Those with base stickers may use Gate One, Gate Four, Gate 10, off Coddington Highway, or Gate 11, near the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. The general public may enter Gate One starting at 4 p.m.

Music and concession sales at Dewey Field will begin at 5 p.m. The rain date is Saturday, September 3.

The concert and fireworks display is sponsored by the Home Depot, Newport Storm, Budweiser, Geico Direct, and US Family Health Plan.
