Pickett Magruder Greig, 85

Pickett Magruder Greig, 85, of 6200 Oregon Avenue NW, Washington, D.C., and 21 Bayview Drive, Jamestown, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005 at Newport Hospital. He is survived by his wife Betty Carter Greig. He was also the husband of the late Martha Appleton Greig.

Born in Newport, he was the son of the late Capt. Stuart Osmond Greig, USN, and Adele Magruder Greig. He was the grandson of the late Admiral Thomas Pickett Magruder.

Mr. Greig attended St. Alban’s School in Washington, D.C., and graduated from St. George’s School and the University of Virginia. He was also a graduate of the University of Virginia Law School. Mr. Greig practiced law in Newport. He worked for Commonwealth Land Title in Providence for 20 years, retiring in 1983.

Throughout his life, he was an active member of the Jamestown community. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the RI Bar Association, the Society of Colonial Wars, the Conanicut Yacht Club, the Chevy Chase Club in Maryland, and the Pilgrims of St. Mary’s, also in Maryland. He loved his home on the bay in Jamestown, where he spent his summers.

Besides his wife, he is survived by children David Ely Cain, of Fayston, Vt., Thomas P.M. Greig of Jamestown, Nancy Cain Haynes of Sag Harbor, N.Y., Elizabeth A. Hyman of Saunderstown and Louisa Greig-Bisbing of Camas, Wash. He had eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

He was the brother of the late Adele Richardson and the late Elizabeth Lund.

AMass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, September 3, at St. Mark Church, Jamestown. Burial was in St. Mark Cemetery.
