Islander honored with nature walk
The Rhode Island Wild Plant Society will hold a walk in memory of the late Jamestown naturalist, Richard Champlin.
The walk will be on Sunday, Oct. 23, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Mt. Tom Trail, part of the Arcadia Management Area in Exeter.
The plant society named the walk in honor of Champlin, who was fond of the Mt. Tom Trail and often walked the area in search of rare and native plants. Champlin was named a Distinguished Naturalist in 1996 by the Rhode Island Natural History Survey.
Lisa Gould of the RINHS will lead the walk through rocky ledges, beautiful oak and pine woodlands, and along stream edges. The walk is considered “strenuous.” Call 453-3777 to preregister. The fee is $3 for members and $5 for non-members.
