Giving thanks

Thursday is Thanksgiving, a day that is steeped in tradition and historical significance.

We often look upon Thanksgiving as a remembrance of those settlers who braved the dangers of a new world. At the first Thanksgiving, the settlers gathered to feast in celebration of a successful harvest, which meant they just might survive the coming winter.

Today, the holiday is a time to gather with family and friends. It is a time to watch parades and football, and ultimately share in a traditional feast of our own. For many of us, Thanksgiving is also a time to reflect on the past year.

Thanksgiving also signifies the start of the holiday shopping season as merchants and consumers alike count down the days until Christmas.

The staff at the Jamestown Press wish our readers and advertisers a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
