Firefighters to get new protective gear

Town Councilors unanimously agreed Nov. 14 to award a contract for $26,325 to Stillman Uniforms of Westerly, the third lowest of four bidders to supply 20 sets of firefighter protective clothing and equipment for the Jamestown Fire Department.

The award was made on the basis of the recommendation of Fire Chief James Bryer Jr., who said the equipment met specifications, came from the company that supplies the department with dress uniforms. The company has provided excellent service, and the gear could be repaired in Westerly, allowing quick service, Bryer said.

The other bidders were FireMatic of Sterling, Mass., $26,140; Shipmans of Waterford, Conn., $26,241; and FireTech & Safety of Chelmsford, Mass., $29,718.

Payment for the contract will come from $22,000 in the town capital budget and the balance of $4,325 from the Fire Department’s donation fund.
