Schroder to talk about his new book
The Friends of the Conanicut Battery, with the support of the Jamestown Historical Society, is sponsoring a talk and book signing by author Walter K. Schroder at the Jamestown library on Thursday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m.
Schroder’s new book, “The Hessian Occupation of Newport and Rhode Island, 1776-1779,” describes the recruitment and utilization of Hessian troops that accompanied the British in their invasion of Newport and Rhode Island in December 1776. Based largely on a review of Hessian unit histories and individual diaries and journals, the book provides answers to such questions as: Who were the Hessians? Where did they come from? Were they mercenaries or auxiliaries? Why did Hessians participate in the Battle of Rhode Island in August 1778?
This well illustrated, easy-reading book also describes raids and incursions into nearby areas such as Jamestown and Bristol, and provides an insight into Hessian activities, including the upholding of discipline, organized church-going, social events, and public attitudes.
Formerly of Jamestown, Schroder is a Friend of the Conanicut Battery and a member of the Jamestown Historical Society. He has written five well-received books on Rhode Island military history to his credit and is known from his many lectures on the subjects of his books.
