IYRS hosts open house

Most winter evenings inside the International Yacht Restoration School’s workshops at Restoration Hall are silent, and the lights are dimmed as soon as students complete their work for the day and head home. But on Tuesday night, Dec. 13, the lights inside the hall will burn bright as staff and students transform this workspace for the school’s annual Holiday Open House.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the event runs until 8 p.m. at the IYRS campus at 449 Thames St. The evening is a fun way for the school to showcase its latest student restoration projects.

In addition to a crowd of those who love classic boats, staff and students will be on hand to talk with those who are interested in learning more about the school’s educational programs and the boats restored at IYRS.

This year, students are restoring 11 classic wooden boats, including a fleet of 12-foot Beetle Cats originally designed in 1921, two 21-foot Manhasset Bay onedesign sloops, and a replica of a 12-foot tender designed by the legendary Nathanael Herreshoff.
