St. Mark CYO basketball teams are on a roll
Three St. Mark CYO basketball teams have advanced to playoffs.
The eighth-grade girls coached by Kevin O’Connor and Mary Heath entered the statewide Open Division this year, and finished second with nine wins and two losses.
Coach Tom Waddington’s seventh grade boys have once again had a successful season with record of 11 wins and three losses, finishing third.
The up and coming fifth/sixthgrade boys team coached by Mary Heath finished second with 11 wins and three losses.
Coach Chris Crawford’s eighth-grade boys team finished fifth, just missing a playoff spot, but had a very successful season with nine wins and five losses.
Eddie Gillis’s sixthand seventh grade girls team had a great season with a lot of close games, finishing eighth in their division.
St. Mark seventh-grade boys beat St. Theresa on Sunday in the first round of playoffs. They play their quarterfinal playoff game on Saturday, March 4, at 4 p.m. at Kickemuit. The 5th/6th-grade boys won their playoff game over the weekend in overtime against Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Down by 11 at half time, the boys rallied back to win 35-31.
High scorers for the game were Joe Reale with 13 points and Owen Heath with 6 points. Tyler Woodward and Nathan Lambert played strong defense while James Chamberlain led the team in assists.
Matt Rafanelli scored the winning basket to put the game into overtime. Adam Southworth and Kevin McDermott sunk two free throws each to clinch the overtime victory! Danny Bailey, one of the team’s strongest rebounders and scorers was not at the game, but has been the team’s leader and important to their success all season.
They play St. Luke’s this Saturday, March 4, at 2 p.m. at Rhode Island School for the Deaf.
The girls’ Open Division playoff schedule has not yet been released.
