Drivers needed for soap box derby
The 11th annual All American Newport Lions Soap Box Derby will take place on Saturday, May 13, Memorial Boulevard, Newport, beginning at 9 a.m.
"Sponsors" of a soap box derby car will give a youngster the chance to experience the thrill of racing a car in the All American Soap Box Derby and the potential opportunity to represent Rhode Island in an all-expensespaid trip to the National Soap Box Derby held in Akron, Ohio, on Saturday, July 22.
The deadline for applications to drive in the Derby is April 10, 2006! Please call the Derby hotline below for further information regarding the application!
There are three classes of race cars: Stock Division, car and driver totalling 200 pounds; Super Stock Division, car and driver totalling 230 pounds; and the new Masters' Division, car and driver totalling 255 pounds.
Boys and Girls between the ages of 9 and 16 are invited to participate. They can call and sign up for the clinic and learn how to build and race a car in the derby. The only clinic date this year is Saturday, April 8, 9 a.m. at the Newport Boys' & Girls' Club.
The derby is sponsored by the Newport Lions Club with the generous help from the Viking Riders. Winners will receive an expense paid trip to race in the Nationals in Akron, Ohio.
