Green Up Day at the ball fields is this Saturday
There will be a special Green Up Day at the middle school baseball field on Saturday, March 25, from 9 a.m. to noon. Parents, middle school players, and Babe Ruth players as well as baseball coaches and committee members, are asked to attend and help out. Volunteers should bring rakes and gloves.
We are getting into the final weeks of registrations. Parents can still register players by downloading a registration form from www.jamestownri.com/baseball, and then mailing it in with the appropriate fee. Registration forms are also available at the Community Center and Baker's Pharmacy. The final live registration will occur on Tuesday, March 28 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Community Center. Registrations for all age groups must be submitted by March 31.
The annual indoor baseball tryout will be held on Saturday, April 1 at 8 a.m - note the time change - at Sam Horn's Around-the-Horn Indoor Sports Complex on Route 2 in East Greenwich. The tryout will last approximately two hours. First-time major league candidates, boys and girls, are required to attend this tryout and candidates must be a minimum of 9 years old on April 30. Players who cannot attend must call Tony Rafanelli at 423-3953.
Current major league players are not to attend this tryout since they will remain placed in the major league. No player will be allowed to try out unless his or her registration form has been submitted. Candidates should arrive at Around the Horn by 7:45 a.m. Around the Horn is located at 3377 South County Trail in East Greenwich. Its phone number is 885-5959.
Players and families should refer to the Jamestown Press in the next few weeks regarding announcements of the outdoor practices and tryouts that will take place in April.
During the first week of April, outdoor tryouts will be for the Babe Ruth and Major League level candidates. During the remainder of the months, outdoor practices will be held for all age groups. These outdoor sessions will occur on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m, Thursdays at 5:30p.m., Saturdays at 9 a.m., and Sundays at noon, all at the Lawn Avenue ball fields.
We will need parents to help with these practices. Baseball experience is not necessary. Contact Steve Heath, 423-0160, if you are willing to help out, even if it is for only one or a few of these sessions.
Jamestown Baseball is asking various civic organizations to consider sponsoring recycling receptacles. Contact Tony Rafanelli at 4233953 for more information. Also, the league is in need of a weatherproof public address system.
