Council approves liquor license transfer
Sitting as the Alcoholic Beverage Licensing Board, the Town Council Monday approved the transfer of the retail liquor license for Jean Page, Inc., doing business as Page's Liquors at 30 Southwest Ave., to the newly incorporated Varsha Inc., to do business as Jamestown Wine and Spirits.
A new license then was issued to the new owner.
Varsha Patel of Johnston is the incorporator and only officer of Varsha Inc. that she will also manage through her newly incorporated Roma Enterprises.
Patel is buying Page's Liquors from its officers, Peter Ceppi and Page Dickinson, who have had their corporation since 1992.
The new owner is a tax accountant with a degree from Rutgers University who plans to give up her accountant work. Her husband Ilesh Patel, who earned his master of business administration in their native India, has been operating a liquor store in Cranston for three years. They are the parents of three children.
Councilman Michael Schnack questioned the extension of hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., with an hour later in the summer.
Town Solicitor A. Lauriston Parks said the hours are legal and allowable.
Councilor Barbara Szepatowski said that she hoped the new owner "will be sticklers" about not selling liquor to anyone under age 21.
Schnack suggested that Patel "be aware" that Page's recently retrained all their employees about the sale of alcoholic beverages because late last year the store was one of two establishments caught selling to an underaged person in an announced police check of liquor outlets on the island.
The approval of the licensing actions came after a brief hearing during which no public comments were made.
