Cub Scouts race in Pinewood Derby Jamestown Cub Scout Pack 1 raced fast cars in their annual Pinewood Car Derby over the weekend. Some 29 Cub Scouts registered and competed in the race that was held in the Community Center on Saturday, March 25. Each Cub Scout built his own car from an official BSA Pinewood Derby Car Kit. The cars were carefully inspected to verify their weight and size, and then raced down a brand-new, 40-foot-long, six-lane track made of shiny aluminum. A state-of-the-art computer tracking program was used to time the races down to 1/10,000th of a second. This year the competition was very stiff and many cars crossed the finish line within fractions of a second of one another. A final race was conducted to determine the overall winners. All the cars were also judged for the Best of the Show award, and several other award categories. Many winners in all age groups took home trophies, ribbons, badges, and award certificates. The Best of the Show Trophy was awarded to Ian Archibald for his Police Cruiser, car number 29. The final race winners were: first place, Jackson Hawkins, no. 2; second place, Shane Foley, no. 24; third place, Ben Stewart, no. 40; fourth place, Kyle Rafferty, no. 11; fifth place, Evin Barrett, no. 44; sixth place, Truman Christie, no. 30. Winners of the first three places will have the opportunity represent Jamestown Pack 1 by competing in the 2006 Quequatuck District Pinewood Car Derby to be held on Saturday, April 24. This years Pinewood Derby drew a sizeable crowd of observers from around the island. A well-stocked concession stand kept bellies full. |
