Soccer season opens

The Jamestown Soccer Association opened the spring competitive season at the Eldred Avenue ball fields last Sunday under a blue sky and unusually warm weather. Jamestown is fielding five competitive teams this season.

Playing in the Under-10 Division, the Island Strikers recorded a win in their opener against an evenly matched team from Middletown. Trailing 2-0 at the half, Jamestown mounted an aggressive drive, creating a number of scoring opportunities. Seven minutes into the half, Kevin McDermott accepted a pass from midfielder Logan Bradley, sprinted past a defender on the left side of the field, and scored. A short while later, Jared Ford broke out of a tangle of players in front of the net, and with an assist from Kelly Heiniger scored to tie the match. With only minutes to go in regulation, Ford scored again on a PK to log the first win of the season.

After the game, coach Mike Bradley said, "It was a great team effort. This is a new combination of players, and we're still developing playing combinations, but I am very proud of the way we played."
