Volunteers to rehab three Newport County houses

On April 29, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Rebuilding Together Greater Newport, an affiliate of Rebuilding Together Providence, will participate in a workday to assist some designated homeowners with repairs to their homes.

Rebuilding Together Greater Newport started six years ago under the guidance of Rebuilding Together Providence. Nationwide in 2005 Rebuilding Together rehabilitated 8,670 houses and non-profit facilities. Some 225,000 volunteers donated their time and skills, and 250 affiliates nationwide completed work in 865 cities and towns.

In order to qualify for the program, people must own their home and qualify under the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development income guidelines.

Sponsors pay $2,500 to back a site and provide volunteers for two days of work. Each house has a volunteer contractor who oversees the work.

This year the Newport County Chamber of Commerce will make repairs to one house in Middletown and two in Newport.

The Newport Hospital/Salve Regina University group is charged with rehabilitating a house in Middletown. One house in Newport has been selected for repairs by the Newport County Board of Realtors.

All donations to Rebuilding Together Greater Newport are most welcome.
