Frostbiters finish winter sailing series

The Shellback dinghy frostbiters held their last races for the winter series this past Easter weekend on Saturday morning under warm sunny skies and 5to 10-knot southwest winds.

Nine racers showed up for the starting line set up by Race Committee Dick Allphin and George Rice off town beach in front of Shoreby Hill Green. The winning tactic for the day was to pay attention to the strong outbound tide.

On the starts, the tide carried some racers over early and they had to re-start. On the windward legs, those who went too far left or right were carried by the tide beyond the best approach and they had to reach back to the mark and give up distance to those in the middle of the course.

After the seven races, the sailors did not return to the Conanicut Marine floats, but instead headed for the beaches in order to haul their boats out on dollies and trailers and take them home. This year there are plans in the making to have a Friday evening summer series to be held off the Conanicut Yacht Club.

Results for April 15: John Horton won the day with a low score of 13 points. Second place went to Martin Keen with 19 points; third, John Quinn 20 points; fourth, Terry Jones, 35 points; fifth Joe Logan, 38 points; sixth, Jack Hubbard, 42 points; seventh, Henry Siegal, 44 points; eighth, Rob Salk, 52 points; ninth, Gary Fisher, 54 points.
