Spring bird count planned for May 6

The 22nd annual Conanicut Island Spring Bird Count will be held on Saturday, May 6.

Participants should meet at the Jamestown Police Station at 6:30 a.m. with binoculars and bird books, wearing comfortable shoes. The group will be divided to cover four general areas of the island - the farms, Beavertail, the north end, and in-town - and count all birds seen. In the past, the record number of different species spotted was 114, and the number from last year was 110.

Birders will meet back at the police station at noon to tally numbers, and may return to the field in the afternoon for more informal birding. Birders may also contribute sightings in their yards by calling Candy Powell, 423-1492, or or Evelyn Rhodes at 423-1254.
