Sailing day for people with disabilities
On Saturday, May 20, people of all ages with disabilities are invited to enjoy sailing free of charge at the Shake-A-Leg Open Sailing Day, from l l a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fort Adams State Park.
This annual event is a fun way to kick off the summer season and an ideal opportunity for people with any disability to try sailing for the first time, or simply to enjoy an outing on the water with family and friends.
Shake-A-Leg operates the oldest Adaptive Sailing Program in the United States, and in 2005, over 500 people with disabilities enjoyed the waters of Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay.
The Shake-A-Leg fleet of five Freedom 20's were custom designed and built so even the most severely disabled can safely sail, and each boat is fitted with two supported seats for those in wheelchairs. An instructor accompanies each group on the water, and all the required safety equipment is provided.
The program runs from June through the end of August, by appointment, embarking twice daily Monday through Friday from Shake-A-Leg's fully accessible sailing compound at Fort Adams State Park.
