Stuart birthplace holds spring festival

Every spring, the Gilbert Stuart Museum in Saunderstown opens its doors for the season with the Fish on the Run event, to celebrate the annual return of the buckies in Gilbert Stuart stream.

The annual Fish on the Run event will take place in the buildings and on the grounds of the Gilbert Stuart Museum on Sunday, May 7, from 1 to 4 p.m.

At this year's celebration, wildlife biologists will explain how the buckies use the fish ladder to get upstream, show folks the fish with the underwater camera, and explain why the state Department of Environmental Management has prohibited buckie fishing this year.

Artisans will be on hand, and there will be a tasting of homemade Johnnycakes.

Tours of the birthplace will be given by museum volunteers.

Tickets cost $6 for adults, $3 for children, and $15 for families. They are available at the museum. Call 294-3001 for more information.
