Foundation offers student scholarships

The Rhode Island Foundation is offering scholarships for students in several categories.

+ The Rhode Island Commission on Women/Freda H. Goldman Education Awards, supports women who need financial assistance to pursue an education or job training beyond high school.

Candidates for the awards must be enrolled or registered in an educational or jobskills training program, live in Rhode Island, and demonstrate financial need. Two awards ranging from $300 to $600 will be given. The application deadline is June 12.

+ Rhode Island women who have been accepted to or who already are attending an accredited law school can apply for a $2,000 scholarship from the Marilynne Graboys Wool Scholarship Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation.

+ The Bruce and Marjorie Sundlun Scholarship Fund, established at the Rhode Island Foundation in 1990 "for scholarships for single parents returning to school," is seeking applicants for the fall semester. Supplemented by the Barbara Reynolds Memorial Scholarship Fund "for scholarships to innercity students who are single parents," the fund will award three to five scholarships of up to $1,000 each.

Preference will be given to single parents, male or female, who are currently enrolled in a Rhode Island institution of higher learning or continuing education, including academic, trade, or vocational programs. Individuals who are currently or have recently received public assistance and those who will soon be released from prison are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be Rhode Island residents and be able to demonstrate financial need.
