Under-10 co-ed soccer team wins season ender 5-4

The Jamestown Soccer Association Under 10 co-ed competitive soccer team traveled to Burrillville and won their season finale on Sunday.

Muddy field conditions made for tough going Sunday as Burrillville charged out with an all-out six-man assault on first timekeeper Logan Bradley and defenders Nick Beal and Garrett Bucklin. The islanders quickly regained their composure, but not before Burrillville logged their first goal, which many in attendance thought had not crossed the muddy goal line. Both teams settled in and were tied heading into the half when midfielder Phil Nihan broke though the defense and went head to head with the keeper, beating him to put Jamestown ahead by 1.

There was no letup in the second half. Jamestowners Emma Vogel and Alexa Geib battled for control of the swampy midfield. Forward Kelly Heiniger, on loan from Colorado Springs, was scoreless coming into the game. This was her breakout game, in a physical match, and with much to prove, Kelly scored again, twice in the second half, recording her first career hat trick. Burrillville would not rest and continued to press the attack only to be thwarted by acrobatic keeper Bradley. High scorer for the season, Kevin McDermott answered again and iced the win late in the game, bending a corner kick to score unassisted.

This was a tremendous win for a team that had struggled during the season. Equipment has not yet been put away for this season, and plans are already underway to continue training and planning for next spring.
