Openings on town boards need to be filled
Town officials are looking for volunteers to fill vacancies on six committees and boards.
+ Two vacancies with three-year terms exist on the Affordable Housing Committee. This committee acts in an advisory capacity to the Town Council on issues relating to housing. Members sit as a review committee for proposed Housing Trust Fund Projects. They also conduct studies and analyses of the current housing conditions in Jamestown to be used as a part of the state-mandated Comprehensive Community Plan.
+ One vacancy with a three-year term exists on the Fire Department Compensation Committee. In accordance with Section 4 of an ordinance providing tax relief for the members of the volunteer fire department, committee makes annual recommendations to the tax assessor regarding the eligibility for an exemption for each volunteer.
+ Three vacancies exist on the Personnel Board. Two have three-year terms and one has a two-year term. This board makes recommendations to the Town Council regarding policies and procedures governing town employees and may be assigned other related duties by the council. Meetings are held as needed based upon the assignments. In accordance with the town's Home Rule Charter, no member of this board can hold or be a candidate for any public office or position for at least two years before his or her appointment. Board members cannot belong to any national, state, or local committee or political party.
+ Two vacancies with three-year terms exist on the Tax Assessment Board of Review. One regular member (Republican) and one alternate member. This board hears and considers the appeal of any property owner concerning the amount of assessed property valuation as determined by the tax assessor. The board keeps accurate records of its proceedings that are available for public inspection.
+ Three vacancies exist on the Town Buildings and Facilities Committee. Two are for regular members, and one is for an alternate member. The committee is charged with evaluating the condition and usefulness of existing municipal facilities and developing a plan outlining the nature of the renovations and changes determined necessary.
+ Two vacancies with three-year terms exists on the Traffic Commission. The commissioners investigate parking and traffic issues, including stop signs, speeding, parking, and other similar issues in the town. They also make recommendations to the Town Council. Meetings are held when matters have been referred to the committee.
Applicants must be registered voters in Jamestown in order to qualify for appointment. Anyone who wants to serve on these panels should submit an application and a letter of interest and background before June 23 to the Town Clerk, 93 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown, RI 02835.
