Resident faces charges for encouraging teens to fight

Kevin J. Barrett, 43, of 75 Southwest Ave. was charged June 19 by North Kingstown police with several counts after he allegedly encouraged his teenage daughter to assault a schoolmate in the parking area of North Kingstown High School.

Barrett is a custodian at the Jamestown schools.

According to the police report, a school bus driver witnessed the incident, which took place at about 10 a.m. after Barrett picked up his daughter following final exams.

In the report, the bus driver said she saw the girl get out of the car being driven by Barrett, walk over to two other girls, and begin to assault one of them. The bus driver said she heard Barrett cheering the girl on, saying, "Hit her, hit her. Punch her, punch her."

Barrett was charged with simple assault, conspiracy, disorderly conduct, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Barrett pleaded not guilty at his June 21 arraignment and was held on bail.

He is scheduled to appear July 11 in Washington County District Court, police said.
