hall contract expected by August

Town Administrator Bruce Keiser told the Town Council Monday that he expects to have a negotiated contract for the new town hall complex within the $3 million voter-approved budget ready for early August.

He said the designed air-conditioning and heating system has been deemed "overkill" for the 10,000 square foot main structure and can be provided for half the $600,000 expected. He met last week with the three low bidders, among four who offered to build the new complex for between $3.4 and $4.3 million. He said said they are working to submit revised bids based on specifications Keiser discussed with them last week.

The administrator and councilors also briefly discussed information about some sources of donations, including for landscaping, but emphasized such fundraising was geared toward aesthetic expenses, not basic construction items covered by the contract to be awarded.

The original bids were: Pezzuco Construction of Cranston, $3,435,395; ADS Construction of East Providence, $3,690,000; J. G. Edwards Construction of Portsmouth, $3,983,000; and Parker Thompson of East Providence, $4,318,128.
