Cal Ripken team plays well at state tourney
Last weekend, Jamestown Baseball's 12-year-old all-star team competed in the R. I. Cal Ripken State Tournament in Apponaug.
After losing 9-1 to West Warwick on Saturday, the team rallied on Tuesday and defeated St. Anthony's, of North Providence 5-2.
On Wednesday, in a key match against host Apponaug, the team exerted a tremendous effort before losing 7-2. Jamestown loaded the bases in the fourth inning, putting Apponaug on the ropes.
Some noteworthy efforts throughout the tournament were as follows: The pitching staff of Joe Reale, Ryan Southworth, Marshall Vigneault, and Jacob Morris gave up only 6 earned runs over three games - 18 innings. Ryan Southworth had two home runs. There was one defensive double play started by Garrett Reis and completed by Joe Reale to end game two. Ryan Southworth made an over-the-shoulder catch to rob a hit. Zack Henning and Nick Lutes had clutch, two-out RBI hits, and there were several outstanding defensive plays in the outfield by Jacob Gomez and Bruce Page. Catchers Jacob Morris and Christian Ellerbe surprised more than a couple of would-be base thieves by throwing them out on attempted steals
CYC sailors dominate NBYA Laser regatta
On July 11, seven Conanicut Yacht Club junior sailors attended the first Narragansett Bay Yachting Association Laser Regatta at the Wickford Yacht Club. The Laser is the men's and women's single-handed Olympic boat.
Twenty-one sailors from area yacht clubs completed seven races in moderate to heavy winds, and the CYC shined throughout the day.
As the breeze and waves built, CYC sailors came on even stronger, displaying superior physical ability and advanced downwind techniques. Nicole Heinl, Gabriel Salk, Ted Green, Matt Gowell, and Brendan Faria all won races. Most CYC Laser sailors have only been sailing the Laser for a year, but have already far surpassed those sailors from other clubs who could beat them last year.
Last week's race results: Radials: First, Ted Green; Second, Brendan Faria (first-place tie-breaker); third, Nicole Heinl, fourth, Matthew Gowell. Laser 4.7: first, Gabe Salk.
