Sail aboard antique Sloop Providence

The Continental Sloop Providence will offer public sails out of Jamestown this weekend.

Rhode Island's state flagship, the Providence, will offer public sails out of Conanicut Marina this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Times are 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, 1:30 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets cost $25 per adult, and $15 per person for children ages 6 to 12. Children under the age of six cannot board the ship for safety reasons. Reservations are recommended, but walk-ons are welcome, space permitting. Call 401-274-7447 or visit www.sloopprovidenceri.org.

The Sloop Providence is a 110-foot, traditionally-rigged sailing vessel that is a faithful replica of Revolutionary War hero Captain John Paul Jones' first command. She was built in 1976 for this nation's bicentennial.

The Providence appears in the current "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," as various vessels, including a merchant ship that is destroyed by a sea monster, the Kraken.
