All stars play in state tourney
The Jamestown 11-year-old Cal Ripken All Star Team participated in the R. I. State Tournament this past weekend at Slater Park in Pawtucket.
The team was very successful, winning one game in the doubleelimination tournament. Prior to two tough losses to West Warwick and Darlington, the Jamestown team shined in its opening game. On Saturday, Jamestown played errorless defense, shutting out South Providence 7-0.
Alex Burke and Nick Fay each pitched three innings, giving up two hits with four walks. Jamestown scored solitary runs in the first three innings. James Chamberlain broke the game open with a three-run dinger in the fifth. Danny Irwin had two triples, while Tim Howe and Burke contributed to the squad's 10-hit attack with extra-base knocks. Defensively, Jamestown sparkled, making plays at the all the bases, including two tag-outs at the plate.
Despite losing their second game, tournament officials went out of their way to congratulate Jamestown on their demonstration of sportsmanship and love for the game.
