Salute summer with the Navy
Preparations are underway at Naval Station Newport for the big Friday, Sept. 1, 5 p.m. "Salute to Summer" open house on the lawn at Dewey Field.
The Morale Welfare and Recreation Department has overall responsibility for the event and has arranged for a variety of food and drink vendors to satisfy everyone's culinary cravings, as well as a 25-minute spectacular fireworks display over Narragansett Bay, which will begin at about 8:45.
As a special treat, the Naval War College Museum has agreed to stay open late to satisfy everyone's historical curiosity.
This annual family event will feature performances by two great bands from the Navy Band Northeast. Navy Band Northeast's Rhode Island Sound will open the show with a concert of contemporary and classic rock. At approximately 7 p.m., the Concert Band will take the stage to perform patriotic marches and light concert pieces. The program will include a salute to veterans of all services.
The concert is free and the public is invited as guests of the commanding officer. Concert attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.
Due to increased security measures, no coolers, backpacks, glass bottles, or pets will be allowed on to the naval complex.
The general public should enter Naval Station Newport through Gate One, the main entrance near the Officers' Club, starting at 4 p.m.
