Dutch Island Lighthouse Society holds Fund-raiser
The Dutch Island Lighthouse Society is ready to go to bids for the renovation of the structure that was originally constructed in 1827. The DILS is waiting for the state Department of Transport to allocate a $120,000 grant from the Transportation Enhancement Act.
Although the TEA is depleted of funds for 2006, the 2007 fiscal year starts on Oct. 1. The lighthouse project is first in line for the $120,000 towards renovation and restoration thanks to Governor Carcieri. In the event funds are not available for the TEA, the governor's staff is looking into ways to use discretionary funds controlled by the governor. Carcieri and his staff have deemed the Dutch Island Lighthouse a high-priority project.
On Aug. 27, the "Mind the Light II" fund-raiser will be held from 3-6 p.m. at 23 Avenue B, in Jamestown. Drinks and hors d'oeuvres will be served. Entertainment will be provided by Ye Mariners All, the world renowned duo widely acclaimed for their renditions of maritime and colonial music. Tickets cost $20.
