Further explosions planned

The state Department of Transportation is planning a series of underwater explosions to take down the remaining piers on the western side of the old Jamestown Bridge.

There was a detonation yesterday to remove four piers on the North Kingstown side of the bridge and remaining detonations will be on Tuesday, Aug. 29, and Thursday, Aug. 31. All detonations will be between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and State Police troopers will execute a "rolling block" by traveling very slowly in all lanes of travel to momentarily clear traffic from the bridge.

The DOT said that it is trying to avoid having to conduct a 30minute closure of the bridge.

Adverse weather conditions could affect planned detonations, the DOT said.
