Islander to perform piano concert
The Jamestown Community Piano Group will present its first concert of the season on Saturday, Oct. 28. Pianist Nancy Bennett, a Beavertail resident, will perform at 3 p.m. at St. Matthew's church. The program will include Beethoven's Pastorale Sonata, solo works by Bach and 20th-century composer John Adams, and Ballade, Opus 19, by Gabriel Fauré.
The Jamestown concert is in preparation for Bennett's senior recital in fulfillment of a bachelor's degree in piano performance at the University of Rhode Island. Her senior recital will be held Saturday, Nov.11, at 1 p.m. at the URI Fine Arts Center Concert Hall. Bennett is a student of Dr. Manabu Takasawa, assistant professor of Music at URI, who has given two wellreceived concerts on the Jamestown piano.
Bennett is a graduate of Swarthmore College and received a master of fine arts from New York University's Institute of Film and Television. She returned to her piano studies after a career in New York producing television commercials for DMB&B Advertising. She teaches piano in Jamestown.
For the Fauré, Bennett will be joined by Dawn Chung, who will play the orchestral reduction. A graduate of URI's master's program in music, Chung performs both classical and jazz piano and teaches privately in South County. The piano that Bennett will play is a Schimmel that was purchased four years ago with donations from Jamestown residents.
The concert is free. Contributions for upkeep of the piano are welcome.
