Smith's Castle plans traditional events

On Saturday, Dec. 2, and Sunday, Dec. 3, from noon to 4 p.m., the Cocumscussoc Association will celebrate Christmas on the cove. The season's theme of "I saw three ships come sailing in on Christmas Day in the morning," stresses Smith's Castle's connections to the sea trade, which brought the residents their tea, china, and finery as part of the Updike family's vast trading enterprise.

The castle will be offering an array of sumptuous treats at the baked goods table, a free craft for children and beautifully decorated colonial rooms.

The Castle gift shop is well stocked and ready for shoppers. Visitors are invited to enjoy complimentary hot mulled cider while shopping or taking in a cooking demonstration in the colonial kitchen or listening to costumed interpreters speak about the Castle's origins as a trading post.

The Castle offers a refreshing respite from the hustle and bustle of "Christmas present." Come nourish "Christmas past" while sipping hot cider and sharing a cup of cheer with the Updikes of yesteryear.

Admission is $3. Children under 10 and members are free. For more information, call 294-3521.

The Castle is located at 55 Richard Smith Drive, North Kingstown, just off Route 1, about 1 mile north of Wickford.
