Land trust receives new properties

The Conanicut Island Land Trust has announced that it has made three new land acquisitions in recent weeks.

Quentin Anthony, president of the land trust, said, "With these new acquisitions, the land trust now has ownership of or easements in 50 properties on the island, amounting to over 430 acres of protected land."

Gloria Dahl, Paul Sullivan, Jeff Kelley and Donna Montgomery had conveyed an easement to the land trust on the property at the north end of the island, Anthony said. He described it as Lot 213 on Jamestown Tax Assessor's Plat 1. "This is an important contribution because it protects a view of Narragansett Bay for the public in perpetuity," he noted. Carol Schatzman has given the land trust an easement on Lot 29 on Jamestown Tax Assessor's Plat 6. This property is contiguous with the extensive and important wetland west of North Main Road and the Jamestown watershed, and is particularly important in view of the recent use of the South Pond for potable water, Anthony said.

The third acquisition was a gift from Alan Reedy of Lot 290 on Jamestown Tax Assessor's Plat 16. According to Anthony, "The land trust is particularly concerned about the protection of properties in the Jamestown Shores, and this property is almost an acre in size," he said. Parcels of this size are rare in the Shores, and the land trust is delighted with Alan's gift. We hope Alan's generosity will inspire others who have undeveloped property in Jamestown Shores to protect it for future generations," Anthony noted.
