Charlotte "Polly" Magruder Buttrick
Charlotte "Polly" Magruder Buttrick, 92, of Jamestown died Nov. 19. 2006 at Newport Hospital after a short illness. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Blenheim Newport in Middletown. She was the wife of the late Duncan Buttrick.
Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of Commodore Cary W. Magruder and Charlotte England Magruder. She graduated from St. Margaret's School in Waterbury, Conn., and Wellesley College, in Wellesley, Mass. She was a lifelong summer resident of Jamestown and moved permanently to the island in 1972. She spent many years in Fairfield, Conn.,
and Barrington, RI. She served on the boards of St. Mary's Home for Children in Providence, Colonial Dames in Rhode Island, Junior League of Providence, Rhode Island Wellesley Club, Rhode Island Federation of Garden Clubs, Conanicut Yacht Club, and St. Margaret's School. She had been a past president of the Jamestown Garden Club, a deputy chieftain for Rhode Island of the Clan Gregor Society, and chairwoman of Upper Shoreby Hill. She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. She delivered Meals on Wheels in Jamestown, well into her eighties. She is survived by her children James Buttrick of Boston and Jamestown, and Sherry Buttrick of Charlottesville, Va.
