Hearty frostbite sailors return to the bay

On the warm and sunny Sunday morning after Thanksgiving, the Conanicut Shellback Dinghy Frostbiters opened up their fifth sailing season.

Thanks again go to Bill and May Munger for the use of the Conanicut Marina floats. Being the season opener, sailors helped each other get their boats out of cars and off trailers and on to the floats for the season.

Race Committee Dick Allphin and Dick Hutchinson set up the racecourse close to the town beach by Shoreby Hill to provide wind shelter from the gusty SW breeze. A new course layout was tried and it worked well - a windward finishing leg of the course versus the usual downwind finish. Windward finishes allow for lead changes right up to the finish line versus the downwind parade finishes. Six races were held. The final scores do not indicate the close racing with overlapped finishes and port/

starboard ducking at the finish line. John Horton was the winner for the day with 8 points, John Quinn second with 13 points, Terry Jones third with 16 points, and Joe Logan fourth with 23 points.
