Contra dance planned in Newport A Community Contra Dance will be held on Friday, Oct. 20, from 8 to 11 p.m. at Fenner Hall, 222 Fenner Ave in Newport. The dance is open to all ages and no partner or experience is necessary. All dances will be taught by caller Linda Leslie. The music is live and provided by the Cajun band Magnolia. All participants should wear soft-soled shoes. Light refreshments will be provided at the break. The dance is a student project to involve a new community with the rich culture of contra dancing. Contras are very popular throughout New England, but unknown to many in Rhode Island. Their fans are growing in number, especially among teens and young people, and establishing a home-dance for Rhode Islanders would greatly benefit the community. Admission is $5 and $3 for seniors and kids 12 and under. Younger children are free. For more on the history of contra dancing, the dance itself, or the Project, visit www.aquidneck. us/capstone.
