Painter Dewey to give gallery talk Nov. 12

Artist David Dewey will give a gallery talk at the Newport Art Museum on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m.

Dewey's current exhibit at the museum, "Water to Water: Maine and Rhode Island in the Paintings of David Dewey," runs through Jan. 28, 2007. The talk is free for members and the cost of admission for non-members.

Dewey, of New Jersey, works in watercolor and often on a large scale. He was already well known for his paintings of harbor scenes and landscapes of coastal Maine when a visit to Aquidneck Island in the late 1990s initiated a significant shift in his focus and style. Color, light, and atmosphere dominate his more recent paintings while evidence of a human presence and even recognizable landmarks have all but disappeared. The Newport Art Museum is located at 76 Bellevue Ave. across from Touro Park. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $4 for students and members of the military.. Museum members and children under 5 are free. By donation Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. Hours are daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday noon to 4 p.m.
