No more bridge explosions

The state Department of Transportation's final detonation at the old Jamestown Bridge was yesterday, Nov. 29.

The controlled explosive demolition removed two underwater piers on the Jamestown side of the bridge.

The final detonation was similar to the 10 previous underwater demolition events that have taken place since August. Traffic impacts on the Jamestown-Verrazzano Bridge were kept to a minimum during the demolition time frame.

The conclusion of the underwater demolition is among the last elements of the $19.5-million project. A cleanup of underwater debris will take place through February. In the spring, landscaping and removal of the construction staging areas will take place.
