Sen. Teresa Paiva Weed (DJamestown, Newport) was re-elected 33-0 to the post of Senate majority leader in the state General Assembly last week. She will begin serving her third term in that role.
Paiva Weed was nominated for the post by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Michael Mc- Caffrey, and the nomination was seconded by Sen. Rhoda Perry.
Senate President Joseph A. Montalbano said, "The historic level of accomplishment in the Senate over the past three years is a testament to Teresa Paiva Weed's insightfulness, her dedication, her vision, her fairness, and, of course, her boundless energy."
Paiva Weed "remains a leader of quality, substance and professionalism, a leader of highest integrity, a leader of whom we are all extremely proud," Montalbano added.
"Working together, as we have in the past, the Senate will provide the leadership to address the challenges our state faces, and make 2007 the most productive session yet," Paiva Weed said upon being re-elected. "My door remains open, and I will continue to be inclusive and accessible. Most of all, I will continue to work hard to live up to the trust you have placed in me," she added.
First elected to the Senate in 1992, Sen. Paiva Weed has served as chairwoman of the Judiciary Committee, vice chairwoman of the Finance Committee and as deputy chairwoman of the Senate Finance Subcommittee on Public Safety and Environment.
Paiva Weed is the first woman to serve as senate majority leader in Rhode Island.
