Berry picker found dead

Two island residents picking berries off North Main Road near the overpass Sunday discovered the body of a woman face down in about six-inches of water in a ditch below the overpass.

Sgt. Bill Piva of the Jamestown Police Department said the woman was about six or eight feet down an embankment from the level of the road and had apparently also been in the area picking berries, a common thing to do this time of year to add color to holiday decorations.

The woman has been identified as Jeanne Turenne, 62, of Narragansett, Piva said.

There was no sign of trauma, he said. The state medical examiner's office concluded Wednesday morning that the woman died of natural causes, Sgt. Piva said.
