Use caution to prevent Christmas tree fires

The Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs is urging all Rhode Islanders to be extra careful this holiday season.

"It is very easy to forget to extinguish candles or to turn off lights on a Christmas tree as you're entertaining during the holidays," said RIAFC President Robert Setzer. "If a Christmas tree is not watered enough and dries out, the chances of the lights igniting a fire are significantly higher."

More than four of every 10 home Christmas tree fires are caused by an electrical problem or malfunction. One in four home Christmas tree fires resulted from a heat source placed too close to the tree.

The RIAFC offers the following safety tips for the holiday season:

• When decorating Christmas trees, always use lights that are designated for indoor use. Some lights are specifically for outdoor use.

• Always use lights and cords that are UL approved.

• Do not use any string of lights with worn, frayed or broken cords or loose bulbs.

• Connect no more than three strands of push-in bulbs or a maximum of 50 screw-in bulbs to one receptacle.

• Always unplug Christmas lights before leaving the house or going to bed.

• When purchasing a tree, check for fresh, green needles.

• Choose a sturdy stand that will not tip over.

• Try to position the tree near an outlet to avoid having to run cords long distances.

• Safely dispose of the tree when it begins dropping needles. Dried out trees are highly flammable.
