Wool blankets from Watson Farm

An Inaugural Edition of the “Rhody Warm Blanket” was presented to Michael Sullivan, director of Department of Environmental Management, on Dec. 6 at the an open house held by the state Resource, Conservation and Development Council. This Official “Rhody Warm” rollout took place at the USDA Conference Center in Warwick.

In June, 1,400 pounds of raw wool was collected by the RI Sheep Co-op and shipped to mills to be scoured, spun, and woven into blankets. Finishing touches have just been made on the blankets.

Don and Heather Minto of the Watson Farm in Jamestown participated in this statewide initiative to create a beautiful blanket with wool from Rhode Island sheep farms. This project is a joint effort of state Resource Conservation & Development Area Council, DEMDivision of Agriculture and the RI Sheep Co-operative.

The “Rhody Warm Blanket” and the Watson Farm’s own “Conanicut Island Blanket” are available in queen size and lap throws. For more information about purchasing these locally grown wool blankets at Watson Farm, contact Heather or Don Minto at 423-0005.

Purchasing the blankets helps support the sustainability of local farms.
