Christmas Bird Count set for Saturday

The 24th annual Conanicut Island Christmas Bird Count will be held this Saturday, Dec. 30, beginning at 7 a.m. in the police station conference room.

Birders will assemble and divide into four groups These will cover the island counting bird species, and then meet back at

the police station at noon to tally the results. Informal birding may continue into the afternoon after a lunch break. Participants should dress warmly, wear comfortable footwear, and bring binoculars and field guides.

Seventy-four species of birds were sighted last year, a record for

the Christmas counts, so the birders hope to top that number this year. For more information, contact Candy Powell, 423-1492, or Evelyn Rhodes, 423-1254.

Bird watchers unable to participate in the field may phone in sightings from their yard to Powell or Rhodes.
