Volunteer opportunities available with CFS

Did you make a New Year's resolution to make better use of your time? Child & Family Services (CFS) has some volunteer suggestions. Transitional Housing provides temporary housing in Newport Heights for homeless women and their families. Many of these women need to acquire skills or fill down time. Volunteers could teach basic cooking, crafts, nutrition, computer skills, and yoga to name just a few. The Volunteer Office will talk to anyone who feels they might be able to offer an appealing and useful program on a one time, monthly or weekly basis. The best time would be the early evenings.

There is also a need for volunteers for the CFS Reading Together program. Volunteers read to some of our boys, 6 to 10 years of age, who live in agency group homes. They are very appreciative of any attention that comes their way. The group will consist of three or four boys who have chosen to take part. Staff is always present. The volunteers will have a part in the book selection process.

Reading Together is tentatively scheduled to start in February on Monday afternoons from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.. The group homes are in Middletown. Volunteers are asked to be available once a month and must be at least 18 years of age. There will be a short orientation meeting scheduled for late January. This is a wonderful opportunity to make a difference with boys who are eager to share some time with volunteers.

The agency always needs Friendly Visitors who visit the homebound elderly or Visiting Resources who are matched with a girl or boy living in one of our group homes.

Call the Volunteer Office at 848-4210 for more information about opportunities.
