      The Afternoon Book Discussion at the Jamestown library continues on Feb. 13, the second Tuesday of the month from 1 to 2 p.m. with "Cane River" by Lalita Tademy. "Cane River" was an Oprah's Book Club Selection.

Tree committee welcomes new members

      The town Tree Preservation and Protection Committee welcomed three new appointees - Anthony Antine, Edwina Cloherty and James Rugh - to the board at its Jan. 16 meeting. Cloherty and Rugh needed no introduction to the committee, since both had previously attended meetings and participated in committee activities over the last few months.

      Participants in the recent land clearing on North Main Road were honored by the Conanicut Island Land Trust at its year's end meeting. Held at the home of Jim and Darcy Estes, the land trust honored the landowners and volunteers who have participated in the ongoing project.

Teen skating night tomorrow
      All high school students are invited for a night of ice-skating at the Newport Yachting Center in Newport on Friday, Jan. 26, from 6 to 10 p.m. The cost of the trip is $7, or $12 with skate rental.       The Friends of Jamestown Library are sponsoring a Pajama Storyhour series for children 3 to 8 years old, which began Jan. 9 and will run on Tuesdays through March 6. Pajama Storyhour takes place in the children's room of the library from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

      The next Sunday Knitting Circle at theJamestown library will take place on Jan. 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. The Sunday sessions are free and open to all levels of expertise. Participants should bring their own needles and yarn. Registration is not needed for the Sunday sessions.

Blood drive this Sunday
      There will be a blood drive on Sunday, Jan. 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Holy Ghost Hall on Narragansett Avenue. The drive will be sponsored by the Arnold Zweir Post 22 of the American Legion and Memorial Post 9447 of the VFW. All donors will receive a free pound of Dunkin Donuts coffee as part of the Community Partnership program during the month of January, which is Blood Donor Month.
