Swimmers finish in third place at Brown meet
      The North Kingstown High School swim team had reason to celebrate on Sunday when the team took third place in a field of 34 teams at the Bay View Girls' Invitational Meet held at Brown University. The team had first-place finishes in four of the events. The 400-free relay team and 200-medley relay teams both broke state records. The 400-free team finished with a time of 3:45.

Professor promotes fisheries worldwide
      Jamestown resident Dr. Cathy Roheim is a professor at the University of Rhode Island in the Department of Environmental and Natural Resource Economics at the College of Environmental Life Sciences (CELS). Her research program broadly covers the area of seafood marketing and international trade in fisheries products.

Bridge players sought
      The group that plays bridge at the Pemberton Apartments Community Room on Tuesday mornings is looking for some new members. Current bridge players, who get together from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., have between two years and many years of experience playing the game. Call Fran at 423-9191.

Renovations for temporary animal shelter to begin soon
      Friends of the Jamestown Animal Shelter Construction Project will start renovations on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the former recreation garage at 44 Southwest Ave., behind the Town Offices. Volunteers with various areas of construction expertise are invited to help make the project a success.

      Citizens concerned about the use of the Beavertail Lighthouse as a suitable dwelling for families are checking out the process by which the U.S. Coast Guard transfers property to organizations and communities, particularly as it pertains to possible environmental cleanup issues.

Warriors place at Lego championships
      Three teams of eighth-graders competed at the recent Rhode Island First Lego League state championship and won honorable mentions for their work. Awards represent the highest achievement for the teams, and all teams receive judging for a group of awards that recognize a standard of excellence for all participants.
