Looking for cost saving ideas
As many of you are aware, budget season for the town is rapidly approaching, with the Town Council and School Committee discussing the 2007-2008 budget throughout February and March. The school administration and School Committee continue to work diligently to formulate school budgets that support the high quality of our students' education, while keeping a mindful eye on our fiscal responsibility to the town's taxpayers.
Over the years, community members have played an important and productive role in providing suggestions to the School Department on ways to improve efficiency and realize cost savings. Last year, for instance, an astute parent noted that several school buses were operating well under capacity. Careful planning allowed the district to eliminate one bus without adversely impacting students, resulting in a $30,000 savings.
As we formulate the July 2008 school budget, we again welcome input from the community that will further improve quality and reduce costs. We encourage you to share your suggestions at the School Committee budget workshops on Feb. 1, 8, and 15. You can also email suggestions to Superintendent Robert Power at email@example.com or mail them to the superintendent at Melrose school. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration.
