Thank a Friend at the library
      The Friends of the Jamestown Library have from the beginning had the goal of helping to make as many resources as possible available to as many people as possible on this island. Indeed, the first bylaws drafted by the Friends said their purpose should be "developing library services and facilities for the community." It still is.

Two years in a remote village
      After growing up in Jamestown and completing his education in Washington, D.C., David Reynolds decided to join the Peace Corps. He was assigned to the remote village of Alcalá, in Bolivia. Via e-mail, Reynolds shared his story of his travels and work with the Corps.

Consistent Care adds quality to lives on and off the island
      A friend of Gail Sheahan, owner of Consistent Care at 8 Clinton Ave., asked her recently, "How does it feel to do what you were meant to do?" Sheahan responded with a smile and said she was lucky to have a career where she looked forward to going to work every day.

Tree committee will take stock of island trees
      At its Feb. 20 meeting, the Jamestown Tree Preservation and Protection Committee again agreed on the importance of taking a new and complete inventory of trees on public property. Committee member Edwina Cloherty summarized the benefits of an inventory. First, it would provide an accurate assessment of the replacement value of these trees in the event of a hurricane or other natural disaster.

Sailors enjoy warm weather
      Frostbite sailors returned to East Ferry on Sunday. Sunny skies, light easterly winds and 35 degrees provided for a second straight good-weather weekend after weeks of being frozen out or blown out. Racing is in Shellback dinghies that can capsize, so the 20/20 rule is used to decide sailing days. Over 20 knots of wind or below 20 degrees usually cancels the racing.

Teachers squeak past students in annual Lawn school hoop match
      When there are two basketball teams, shouting fans, a band playing the ESPN theme song, a halftime shooting contest, and a mascot all in action, there must be something major going on. This was the scene at Lawn Avenue School at a recent afternoon during the student-faculty basketball game.

Star NKHS senior runner almost played soccer
      It is amazing to think about the possibility that Caitlin Crawford was almost not a member of the North Kingstown High School cross country and track teams.

Jamestown Historical Society News
      The Jamestown Historical Society has been around for a long time. We were incorporated in September 1912 "for the purpose of preserving old land marks and collection of historical relics." Our purpose hasn't changed much in 95 years - though we have broadened our mission to include "share with others" what we collect and preserve. This new monthly column is part of that sharing.

Shores group leader voices concern over dogs
      At Monday's Town Council meeting, council President David Long asked Town Administrator Bruce Keiser to investigate complaints made during open forum about dogs in the Jamestown Shores.

Senior center scholarship available
      The Jamestown Senior Citizens Association plans to award a $500 scholarship to any island resident who plans to pursue a career in health care or health care related field. Applications are available at the Senior Center, 6 West St., or by calling Charlotte at 423-1026.

Jamestown police officers complete management course
      Sgt. Keith Woodbine and acting Sgt. Joel Pinocci of the Jamestown Police Department have finished management training. They were recognized by the Justice System Training and Research Institute at Roger Williams University, in partnership with the New England Association of Chiefs of Police, for successfully completing the "Command Training Series: First Line Supervisor Course.

Annual Spay Day drawing near
      Cat spraying the furniture? Dog looking for the love of his life despite the leash law? The Humane Society of Jamestown has a solution - the annual Spay Day drawing. This drawing will enable several lucky winners to have their pets spayed or neutered at no cost. Entry forms and boxes have been placed around town in local businesses and public buildings. The drawing will take place on March 3.

Melrose Avenue school scores are posted in SALT survey
      On Feb. 14, the Rhode Island Department of Education began posting the Information Works! 2007 reports on public schools online. The reports are based on results of the 2006-2007 School Accountability for Learning and Teaching (SALT) surveys taken by staff, students and parents in the district and statewide last November.

For the record
      Town Councilor Michael Schnack was identified incorrectly in the Feb. 25 issue of the Jamestown Press as the person discussing the legality of the annual fishing derby at North Pond Reservoir. Outgoing Town Solicitor J. William W. Harsch talked about policy versus law pertaining to council approval of fishing at the reservoir. Schnack said Friday that he researched the issues raised by Harsch.

Compliance of Clinton Avenue property argued at planning
      Discussion of the upcoming work session to focus on a downtown strategic plan was upstaged by James Donnelly, the attorney representing Jack and Mary Brittain, at its Feb. 21 meeting. The Brittains are under fire for changes made to a new construction on Clinton Avenue not approved by the commission.
