The Senior Times
      In spite of the howling winds and frigid temperatures, seniors have been taking part in the senior programs. Monday through Friday, staff and volunteers welcome our diners to the nutritious meal, served piping hot and delicious.

Get a jump on spring planting with seedling sale
      Spring doesn't arrive officially until March 21, but the Southern R.I. Conservation District is getting a head start by offering a wide variety of trees, shrubs and plants through its annual seedling sale. As in the past, plants can be ordered now by using the order form on the district website, www. sricd.org.

The Island Garden
      It's that time of year again, time to think about starting your seeds. If you assume that May 15 is planting out day, six to eight weeks before that you should start your tomato, pepper, eggplant, leeks, onions, and many other seeds. However, I have found that leeks and onions can be started right now. Peppers and eggplants often take a while to germinate so I start them early too.

Honored by land trust
      The Conanicut Island Land Trust recently honored George and Martha Neale (left) and Harry and Gail Chase (right) with framed photographs of their farms in recognition of their contributions to the North Road clearing project. Land trust president Quentin Anthony presented the photographs.

      On Wednesday, March 14, at 1 p.m., the Friends of the Jamestown Library will present "An Holistic Approach to Diabetes Prevention." Nutritionist Mary Proietta, a registered dietician and a certified diabetes educator, will be the guest speaker. She will focus on the important role of life style in preventing this debilitating disease.

      "Natural Born Charmer" by Susan Elizabeth Phillips - romance between a football hero and a strong-willed girl on the rebound. "Death of a Maid" by M.C. Beaton - the latest Hamish Macbeth mystery, a gossipy housecleaner is bludgeoned with her own pail.

Mark Twain to visit the library
      Richard Clark will perform "And now…Mark Twain!" a delightful look at the life and work of America's foremost humorist. This one-person play is full of wit and wisdom and the special brand of storytelling that made Twain a legend in his time. The performance will be on Sunday, March 11, at 2 p.m. at the Jamestown library and is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Panel meeting about 350th bash
      The committee charged with organizing Jamestown's 350th anniversary celebration will meet next week. Three hundred-fifty years ago the colonists purchased Conanicut Island from the Narragansett Indians. A major islandwide celebration is being planned this summer to commemorate the historic event.
