20% hike proposed in town mooring, outhaul rates
      The Harbor Management Commission voted 5-0 last week to recommend to the Town Council that they raise mooring and out-haul rates by 20 percent. The commissioners agreed on the new across-the-board increase schedule at a special budget meeting held at the police station on Friday.

Town Council agrees to allow fishing at East Ferry pier
      Town Councilors agreed by consensus Feb, 26 to allow fishing this year at the East Ferry Pier. The same rules and provisions as last year will apply, when conditions were judged to be fair and workable after at least three decades of seasonal struggles about problems at the town-owned facility.

Adult day care needs expert witness
      The Zoning Board of Review granted Charles and Gail Sheehan a continuance before ruling on their special use permit and dimensional variance application to build an adult day care center on North Main Road. The Sheehans were not represented by counsel and did not bring expert witnesses to the Feb. 27 zoning board meeting when they presented their application.

Windy day a challenge for frostbite sailors
      Frostbite sailing is risky business on a blustery day. The sunny sky and 40 degrees were great. However, the swooping westerly wind gusts gave frostbiters second thoughts about racing in boats. "Shall we go directly to the coffee shop or sail?" The sailors decided to sail. Then a gust of wind overturned and swamped John Horton's boat dockside.

      Jamestown baseball registration period continues. Players can register by picking up forms at the Recreation Center or at Baker's Pharmacy. Forms can also be downloaded at http://www.jamestownri. com/ (click on "Community Organizations, and then on Jamestown Baseball).

Ski club takes students to Yawgoo slopes
      Thanks to the Lawn avenue ski club there are 45 fewer middleschool students watching TV or playing video games on winter Wednesday afternoons. The club, in its third year, gives students in grades 5-8 the opportunity to spend one afternoon a week skiing or snowboarding at the Yawgoo ski area in Exeter.

St. Mark boys learn a lot during season
      St Mark's fourth and fifth grade CYO basketball team, coached by Chris Varrecchione and Chris Crawford, completed their season this past weekend with a conference game in Bristol. Despite playing older and more experienced kids all year, it was a great learning experience for the team in their first year playing together.

Islanders excited to swim for a good cause
      Swimming conjures up images of sandy beaches, swimming pools and warm summer days for most people, but for the Newport Blues swim team, swimming is a yearround event. The Blues are most of the way through their winter season, which runs from September through March, and currently have a 5-1 record.

Golf course lease extended to current operators
      The town has renewed its lease with Joseph and Harriet Mistowski to continue operation of the nine-hole municipal golf course that is part of the Conanicus Island Center Island District of more than 1,000 contiguous acres of protected land. The town and the Mistowskis shared the prestigious 2006 Business of the Year award of the Audubon Society of Rhode Island.

Committee approves money for path study
      Last week the School Committee asked the superintendent to find $5,000 in the present budget to help fund a recreational development project on and near school grounds. The first phase of the project will target possibilities for recreational improvements in the area, as they were reported by School Committee member Julia Kallfelz at the Feb. 27 meeting.

Town to sign lease for Beavertail property with Coast Guard
      Town Councilors voted 4-0 Feb. 26 to sign the licensing agreement with the US Coast Guard for continued use, until September, of the federal Beavertail Lighthouse property at Beavertail State Park. This, while the various parties involved in the lighthouse's future continue negotiations.

JEMS gets new pulse CO-Oximeter
      The Jamestown Emergency Medical Service, at its Feb. 27 business and training meeting, elected to use funds from our recent fundraising drive to purchase two Masimo Rad-57 Pulse CO-Oximeters at a cost of $3,000 each.

Chairs for the band
      The Jamestown Rotary Club last week donated more than $1,500 to the Lawn Avenue School to purchase new chairs for the band room. Band director Karyn Kauffman (center) accepted the check from Rotary member Mike Schnack. They are flanked by band members and Rotarians.
