Teen Center gets $50,000 Grant
The Jamestown Teen Center will have a permanent home at the Jamestown Community Center due to a $50,000 Youth Opportunity grant from the Newport County Fund of The Rhode Island Foundation.
A variety of programs and activities for teens, including outreach efforts designed to increase attendance, will be available at the center. Plans for a youth newsletter and website offering detailed information about upcoming activities and programs will allow a greater number of teens to access information. The center will collaborate with Studio1011, the designers who created the Newport County Youth Connect website, to devise its own site and newsletter.
The Youth Opportunities Grants program is a joint funding initiative of The Rhode Island Foundation and the Newport County Fund, with each contributing up to $150,000 for three years. The most recent awards, which represent the final year of the initiative, totaled $294,000. An additional $15,000 was set aside for technical assistance to the grantees as they continue their programs.
The Rhode Island Foundation is one of the nation's oldest and largest community foundations, founded in 1916 and now having assets exceeding a half-billion dollars.
